Things to do with a toddler in Philadelphia

The City of Brotherly Love could well be renamed the City of Toddler Fun. Philadelphia looks after their wee set like few other cities in North America. From the fun and frolicking in Seger Park to the Interactive Wall in the Comcast Centre to an Afternoon Disco Club for kids, there is no need to spend a boring afternoon with your little one in this wonderful city. There is something to fit every budget in every season.

1. Absolutely Free

Parks
Philly has terrific parks for the under four set. There is Seger Park with a separate Tot Lot; Herron Park with a brand new splash pad andLiberty Lands Park; which has a ton of green space and free movie nights.

This place is terrific in both good and bad weather. There is a enjoyable outdoor playground and an even more exciting inside playground for kids under five. At 24,000 square feet of indoor fun, kids can ride bikes, drive a train or just play house. A great way for parents and toddlers to wile away a rainy afternoon.

Bad weather also gives you and your wee one a perfect excuse to visit the tallest building in Philadelphia, the Comcast Center. Toddlers (and their parents) are mesmerized by the hugest and coolest interactive video wall you will ever see When you have had your fill of the wall in the lobby you can wander downstairs and listen to your child tell you all about it while window shopping in the lovely stores.

Although the oldest library in the United States isn't in Philly (it's actually in Darby, just west of the city), Philadelphia certainly has a lot to be proud of when it comes to their library system, and they make sure the youngest members of their community aren't overlooked. Almost every library has a children's section with a toddler story-time, singsongs and puppet shows. Make sure you check the branch closest to you for times and information.

2. Almost Free

Carousel, Mini-Golf, and Story-telling Benches are just a few of the unique attractions to be found here. A picnic overlooking the gorgeous fountain is the perfect recipe for a beautiful summer day or a crisp autumn afternoon. Your toddler will love all the attractions; you'll love the smile on his face.

Phlash Bus
Hop on this bus to visit the city's twenty-seven best attractions. At $10 for an all day family pass, you can't beat the value. You will love not having to drive and your child will love the adventure of being on the bus. Check their website for all the stops including many of the attractions listed in this article.

Technically this is free but you will not get out without buying something. It is all indoors (think bad weather day) with charming shops, food vendors, and a big produce market. The little kids just love to watch the Amish make soft pretzels, the live music and of course the chocolate factory.

Toybrary
It is what it sounds like, a library of toys. Children may "check out" a toy the same way they would a book. It is a lovely place too, where kids and parents feel very at home. The hours of operation are limited so be sure to check their website.

A local nightclub becomes a toddler "club" for an afternoon. Generally runs once a month and they have super fun themes for each dance party. You and your budding ballerina don't want to miss out on this one.

3. Worth the Money

If you live in Philly, membership here is worth the price. Deluxe family memberships include free rides (horse, camel, balloon etc). If you are not a resident of the city it is still a worthwhile stop. Prices are $18 for adult and $15 for child and may be purchased on-line to avoid the wait at the gate. Parking is expensive but the Phlash bus will take you there and there is a shuttle from downtown directly to zoo.

From their website, "Our mission to enrich the lives of children by creating learning opportunities through play," With a philosophy like that you know this place will be a hit with your toddler. They have changing exhibits and shows so be sure to check their website before you go.

Your little one can learn all about water creatures and have a great time doing it. Great for kids of all ages.
This list of things to do in Philadelphia is far from exhaustive. If you have a tiny sports fan you may want to take them to one of the city's professional team games or check out some of the geared-to-kids gymnasiums. The things to do with a wee one in Philly are as unique and varied as the toddlers themselves.
